This is an excellent series of 8 videos showing how bees were kept in skeps from the Middle Ages until recently. These were filmed in Germany in the 1980’s and are well translated. Skeps are illegal in Canada because the combs are not movable and therefore cannot be inspected. However, these videos are very interesting from a historical perspective, and if you watch closely, you can pick up some beekeeping tricks that still apply today. Enjoy!

This video is great! what a system he has! I’ve seen versions of skep hives that are designed to allow for inspection….essentially a top bar skep… 🙂
